Today is my last day volunteering at the Springville Senior Center. For those of you who are unaware (as I was), the senior center isn’t an old folks home—it’s a place where seniors can go socialize, quilt, eat lunch, play billiards and bingo, watch Fox news, cheat at cards, and say hi to me, their “little girl, Maret.”
I only had two clients today, an adorable couple who wanted me to take care of their advanced health care directives. They have come in every single week, even though I solved all of their legal issues long ago. When they found out it was my last day, they offered me $10 in crinkled ones for all my help. Of course, I couldn’t take it, but I thanked them and asked them to donate it to their favorite cause (which included Huntington’s disease and help for girls with anorexia). They’re so cute; I am going to miss this. In a perfect world, I will graduate and get a job in elder law and estate planning where only old people and rich people are my clients. That would be perfect.
Anyhow, I need to get back to studying as they do exercises from their chairs to the “G.I. Jukebox.” Which gets me thinking—what music will we exercise to when we’re old? Nothing from my adolescence was worthwhile except Nirvana, but I can’t imagine many old folks tolerating it—even if we rocked out as youngin’s. What songs to you expect we’ll work out to when we’re old?

I actually have loathed most music produced by my generation and plan to do my rockin' to music no later than the 1980s. I plan to aquajog to "Running with the shadows of the night" by Pat Benatar.
I will shuffle around to "Twist and Shout"
And MAYBE I will do a dramatic song and dance routine to the work of NSYNC.
It's not that far away for me - I want Black Water by the Doobie Brothers, or some other soulful blues, or the Doors - Light My Fire and all the rest. A lot of stuff from my college days... pretty hippie stuff. If I'm going to move, I might as well groove.
C'mon! We'll be Jazzercizing it to the inspired lyrics:
"Deaaaaaaaaaad!
Deaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!
Deaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!"
I love 40s swing. And don't even get me started on retro clothes. That GI music made me wish I was at Gerlinger doing an international foxtrot. I hope my seated exercises include oldies from the 40s and 50s, but maybe "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana and "Toxic" by Britney Spears can make an appearance.
The problem with the music I like now (as opposed to the crap I was programmed to like in my adolescence) is that it's much too obscure to reach top 40s popularity. I doubt I'll see the day when the old folks do seated exercises to The Decemberists or The New Pornographers.
