Our first weekend in Hong Kong Had a great kick off when Mr. WM (a successful, rich, Chinese man with so much money he wears the ugly but oh-so-expensive Armani Jeans) gave us his own personal tour of Hong Kong. Mr. WM was my (Logan's) contact with architecture firms here and he is awesome. He was introduced to me by a guy who works my old school and then has proceeded to be super nice and cool and offered to give us a private tour of Hong Kong.
He picked us up at our hotel accompanied by his chauffer. That’s right. Chauffer. We headed down around the south side of Hong Kong Island and checked out the beaches and some more awesome architecture. It was spectacular. It was sunny and lush and mountainous and beachy and great. We cruised around another crazy market (Stanley Market) with lots of good stuff that we’ll have to go back to. Which reminds me, you're all getting chopsticks. It was classier than the ladies market, but still fun and touristy. They had so much cheap stuff. Does anyone need factory reject baby clothes? Toy Story 3 (!?) action figures? What about XXXXXXL shirt? Okay, they also had nice stuff like glass jewelry. We know WM is a good guy because in addition to chauferring us around, buying us lunch, and wearing Armani Jeans, he also bought a little gift for his wife while we were at the market. Ahhh, so adorable.
He took us out to lunch at the maritime museum. It's a really old building that was originally located on the other side of the island. For historical preservation, they kept all the components of the building, but did not keep a good enough record of how it was put together. The result was what amounted to a very large 3-D architecture puzzle with random pillars here and there. It is now used a maritime museum with a host of restaurants.
We went to a Vietnamese restaurant and the food was awesome. I got the lemon-grass and butter prawns and Maret got the yellow curry. But the best part of the meal was that while we ate, he taught me the secrets to being a successful architect. I think I’ll take his advice. After all, he has a chauffer. He had all the cool inside scoops for us. He brought us back to the hotel in time for his meeting and before we left told us he’d like to take us out to this other Chinese restaurant before we go. Hmm… no complaints here.
